Three days after his crucifixion two men were walking down the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus sad-faced and miserably shaken! They thought He was a great prophet and would redeem Israel. Now everything has collapsed. Their hope; their dream; their faith; all crashed. Life seemed meaningless!

Are you in a seemingly hopeless situation? Do you think it is all over and Jesus can no more help you? That your problem is greater than He can handle?

Wait!

As the two men were going down the road, someone joined them. It was the risen Lord whom they thought was dead and gone! He talked with them and explained to them from the Scriptures about Himself how he should suffer and die and rise again! As they listened to Him their hearts started burning within themselves!!!

You need to meet the risen Saviour and listen to His Words of Life! Your heart will burn within yourself! Faith will rise up!

That evening they invited Him to stay with them. How blessed it is! If you call Him He will come! At the table, He became their host. He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them! They noticed something familiar! When Jesus fed the 5000 people He took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them. In the upper room, He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it and gave it to His disciples. On the Cross, He offered Himself to the Father, broke His body and gave it to us that we may have eternal life. He is the “Bread of Life”.

Those men immediately recognized Him as Jesus. As soon as they received the bread their eyes were opened. We need to receive the heavenly bread from Jesus; the Word; the heavenly Manna, every day.

I do not know what Emmaus means. But it was a place where the dejected and disappointed disciples were heading to. But Jesus went down to give them hope. Joy replaced sadness. Hope came in the place of despair. Those men were changed. It happened in Emmaus. The same evening they went out from Emmaus to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples the good news.

Are you heading down to Emmaus downcast and feeling defeated?

Many years ago I heard a preacher telling how the Lord saved him and his wife. His family was going through extreme financial crisis and broken in health. Life was bitter to them. They had not known Jesus at that time. They decided to end their lives. They hired a small boat and were rowing towards the centre of a river planning to drown themselves when their ears caught the sound of singing and preaching of the gospel by a small group of people on the bank of the river. The message was about the risen Lord! It brought them hope. They received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour while in the boat. Their lives changed. Jesus brought peace in their lives. He blessed them. Later he became an ambassador for India in Africa. But he was happier to be an ambassador for Jesus. The boat was his Emmaus. From there he went to preach that Jesus is alive. He sang the song:

“When I remember Jesus died for me
I’ll never go back any more.
No, no, no, no, no,
I‘ll never go back any more.”

Do not go back to Emmaus. Do not stay in Emmaus. God has met you. Go out and be a powerful witness for Him.

Jan 8, 2008 Luke 24:13-35 The death of Jesus brought despondency, disappointment and dismay to his disciples and followers.
